Philippine Senator Benigno Aquino III has been formally declared the winner of the country’s presidential election.

A joint session of the upper and lower chambers of Congress formally proclaimed Mr. Aquino the Philippine’s 15th president Wednesday.

The president-elect won the May 10 automated elections in a landslide, garnering more than 15 million votes, while his closest challenger, ex-President Joseph Estrada, got only 9.4 million votes.

Mr. Aquino will take office on June 30, succeeding President Gloria Arroyo, whose nine-year tenure has been marred by allegations of corruption and election fraud.

He campaigned on a platform of eliminating corruption and poverty. Mr. Aquino is the son of the late President Corazon Aquino and Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., who was assassinated in 1983 at the Manila airportafter returning from exile in the United States to challenge the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos.

BENIGNO AQUINO III

President-elect Aquino is the only son of the late Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino and the National Hero Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. He was a Congressman for nine years representing his province Tarlac in Central Luzon, Philippines. He became a senator after that until his election. He just turned 50 years old and is still a bachelor. Aquino graduated from Ateneo de Manila University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.

JEJOMAR BINAY

Jejomar “Jojo” Cabauatan Binay (born November 11, 1941) is the current Vice President-elect of the Philippines. He is Mayor of Makati City, Philippines which is the business and financial center of the country. Binay studied at the Philippine Normal College Training Department, University of the Philippines Preparatory High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and Bachelor of Laws from University of the Philippines. He passed the bar exam in 1968, and took masteral subjects in public administration and law in UP and University of Santo Tomas, respectively.
