ASEAN — It’s Now or Never

ASEAN or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is turning 40 years old on July 6, 2007. As they say, "Life begins at 40". Others say 40 means being in a midlife crisis. But the question is aside from doubling the number of its members-countries what have been done so far to improve the lives of the citizens of each and every ASEAN -member countries due to this aggrupation.

The word ASEAN common Market has been the talk of the town for years. In fact during the last 12th ASEAN Summit held in Cebu last January 2007, this word became a byword again but it remains just a word. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has echoed again the call for consolidation and integrations of the ASEAN market during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in the spring of 2007 also. But what follows?

It is in this light that we are firing the first shot by giving birth to this paper: ASEAN BIZTIMES – so that the people of ASEAN will know better the culture, business, developments, opportunities in each of the different countries so they can relate better and do business together.

Likewise, partners-countries like China, Japan, USA, UK, Korea, Australia and New Zealand, EC, etc. can also reach out for this growing market for their product, and services.

The birth of ASEAN in 1967 was a necessity due to the turbulent political situation than in the regions especially when the threat of communism was spreading like wildfire and the emerging conflict in Vietnam which escalated into a full-blown, war with the US.

That was past however. The impetus now is assessing economic programs in a world where competition has become a rule. ASEAN Biztimes embraces the responsibility of becoming the first business newspaper in this region which is turning 40. Its role would be that of a Chronicles of events in the world’s fastest emerging economic market and that of a watchdog also.
